Annual
Christmas Morning Tea, 2011. On 6 December at the
Tattersalls Club,150 members and guests enjoyed the social
aspects of the Club as well as listening to the Lyceum Singers
present some unusual and wonderful carols. The 2011 winner of
the Lyceum Club Prize for Classical Voice, Kang Yang, a new
graduate of Griffith University (Queensland Conservatorium)
performed magnificently. This is the second year that this award
has been presented.
Twinning. In August 2011, our Club officially twinned
with the Tauranga Lyceum Club, North Island, New Zealand.
Members are looking forward to opportunities to develop this
bond, including inter-club visits and sharing of activities.
Twelfth
Annual Lyceum Lecture. The highlight of the Lyceum
Brisbane calendar is the Lyceum Lecture, where a woman who has
excelled in her field hailing from anywhere in Australia,
whether that be in the arts, science, literature, journalism or
music are selected to speak at an evening function. This year,
Lisa Gasteen AO, Practice Professor of Opera and an
internationally acclaimed Wagnerian soprano spoke with great
enthusiasm about what was her up-coming Summer School for
talented singers and the need it will help satisfy to prepare
such young people for the rigors of the world stage.
The
Ninety-first Anniversary Luncheon. In April this year,
the annual Anniversary Luncheon had two highlights. Dr Sally
Butler, renowned aboriginal art expert spoke on 'Unsettled
Australia and the Role of Art' and Dr Ruth Kerr AO RHSQ, historian,
was introduced to the members. She has agreed to write a history
of the Club to commemorate its Centenary in 2019.
Our
Patron, Her Excellency, Penelope Wensley AC Governor of
Queensland, as guest speaker at the 2009 Anniversary
Luncheon, amazed those present with her overview of the breadth
of her duties and responsibilities.
The
Club is proud to have had two esteemed members attain the
position of International Vice President, Southern Hemisphere.
Currently, Shirley A. King is currently performing this role and
Life Member Dr Cathryn Mittelheuser AM has previously done so.
Both are also Past Presidents.
